    What is Vietnamese Coffee?

Vietnamese Coffee is a intensely rich and strong dripping coffee brewed using a traditional Phin or Vietnamese filter. It is nothing but a stainless steel coffee filter that usually has a dripping tray, coffee cup chamber, coffee compress and lid.

The coffee grounds are usually added into the coffee cup chamber and then screw down with a coffee compress. The coffee filter with dripping tray is placed on a serving glass with condensed milk. And the coffee chamber is filled with boiling water and closed with its lid.

Finally, the drip brewed coffee collected along with condensed milk in the glass is mixed well and served as it is hot or iced with lot of ice cubes. The hot version is called café nong and the iced version is called cà phê sữa đá in Vietnamese language.

Even though the traditional recipe requires the stainless steel coffee filter or Phin which helps to achieve a strong and intensely rich coffee, you can also use other brewing methods. You could use moka pot, French coffee press or other dripping methods to achieve similar results.

    Ingredients

The ingredients you will need to make this Vietnamese Coffee are simple. But you will also need the traditional phin or Vietnamese Coffee filter to enjoy the authentic flavor and taste. You can find the ingredients as well as the coffee filter in most Asian stores around.

Vietnamese Coffee Ingredients on a table
    • Coffee - Here I have used the Vietnamese Coffee grounds but you can also use other French roast coffee grounds that are handy to you. You can also find Trung Nguyen, Café du monde  and similar Vietnamese coffee grounds that are easily available in online stores
    • Condensed Milk - It gives the perfect sweetness to your strong coffee. You can feel free to adjust the quantity based on how strong your coffee want to be
    • Water - Boiling water to brew your coffee

    How to Make Vietnamese Coffee?

I have shared here how to make authentic Vietnamese Coffee both hot and iced using a traditional Vietnamese coffee filter. It is a strong coffee with a sweet condensed milk taste notes and the unique brewing method makes this drink special from other coffees.

    Vietnamese Coffee in a glass

Following are the high-level instructions to make this drink but for detailed step-by-step instructions with photo and video, please check out the recipe card below.

    • Add Condensed Milk - In a serving glass, add 3 tbsp. of condensed milk
    • Place the Filter - Take the coffee filter or Phin and place them at top of the glass with condensed milk
    • Add Coffee Grounds - Now add the coffee grounds to the filter chamber cup and make sure to spread them evenly
    • Screw the Coffee Press - Press the coffee grounds with the coffee press and screw down slowly half the way. Make sure not to screw it tightly which makes it hard to filter
    • Wet the Coffee - Add 1 tbsp. of boiling water and close the lid. Wait for a few seconds and this helps to moisten the coffee grounds
    • Brew the Coffee - Now open the lid and fill the filter with boiling water and close the lid. Now the coffee will start to drip and wait until all the coffee is brewed into the glass
    • Mix and Serve - Mix well with the spoon and it is ready for you to taste and enjoy

    Iced Vietnamese Coffee

For the iced version, bring down the hot coffee mixed with condensed milk to room temperature. Fill a glass with a lot of ice cubes and pour the prepared Coffee into it. Now the refreshing Iced Vietnamese Coffee is ready for you to taste and enjoy.

    Tips

    • For Rich Flavor - Using Vietnamese coffee grounds or fresh roast coffee gives a rich taste and flavor to your coffee
    • Condensed Milk - The quantity of condensed milk I have used here gives the moderate sweetness and moderately strong coffee flavor. But for intense coffee flavor feel free to reduce the quantity of condensed milk
    • Phin or Filter - I have used the 8 oz. Coffee filter with a cup attached to the dripping filter tray and a screw-down coffee press with a lid. The screw-down coffee press helps to control the coffee dripping which may vary with other models
    • Coffee Grounds - Even though Vietnamese Coffee grounds gives an authentic taste and flavor to this recipe, feel free to use any high-quality French Roast Coffee grounds to achieve similar results
    • Serving - Serve this delicious Coffee hot on cold winter days or iced to quench your thirst on hot summer days
